Green beans are often the unsung heroes of dinner tables, but not when they’re transformed into my Scrumptious Green Beans with Bacon! This dish elevates the humble green bean into something truly special, combining the fresh snap of the beans with the rich, smoky flavor of bacon, all wrapped in a medley of savory seasonings.

From Simple to Spectacular

The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and depth of flavor. With just a handful of ingredients like fresh green beans, diced white onion, and Hormel’s Black Label Real Chopped Bacon, you can create a side dish that’s both nutritious and indulgent. The addition of minced garlic, salt, pepper, and an Italian herb seasoning blend infuses every bite with warmth and complexity.

Cooking Up Comfort

Here’s how you can make this in your kitchen:

  • Start with 1 pound of fresh green beans, cleaned and prepped.
  • Combine them in a 2-quart pan with diced onions, chopped bacon, garlic, seasonings, and chicken broth (or vegetable).
  • Bring everything to a lively simmer, then let it cook down, covered, until the beans are tender and the flavors have melded together, leaving just a hint of the broth behind.

The final touch of unsalted butter melds all the flavors, giving the dish a rich, satisfying finish. This recipe not only simplifies your meal prep but also ensures that every bite is packed with taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Expand All:
Can I make this Vegan?

Yes, you can make this vegan. Substitute the chicken stock with vegetable stock and omit the bacon.

Can I use canned or frozen green beans?

Yes, you can use 2 cans of green beans in place of the fresh. You can also use frozen green beans thawed in the refrigerator overnight before cooking. If you are in a hurry and do not have time to thaw, add 4-5 additional minutes to your cooking time.

Can I use salted butter in place of the unsalted butter?

Yes you can use salted butter. Be sure to omit the salt called for in the recipe or your green beans will be too salty.

Can I use sliced bacon instead of the Hormel Chopped bacon?

Yes, you can. Cook the bacon using your preferred method. Once cooled, crumble it up into the green beans at the same time that you would add the chopped bacon in the recipe. The rule of thumb, in my house anyway, is 1 slice of fresh bacon for every 1/2 pound of green beans. If you are cooking the whole recipe batch then you would need 2 slices of fresh cooked bacon. If you are halving the recipe, you only need one slice of freshly cooked bacon.

Can I add water to reach 1 cup of broth if I only have 1/2 cup broth in my pantry?

Yes. Start by pouring the broth that you do have on hand in a measuring cup. Add water until you reach the 1 cup called for in the recipe. The rule of thumb, in my house, is 1/2 cup of broth per 1/2 pound of vegetables. So a whole batch would need 1 cup of broth (or a combination of broth and water to reach 1 cup). If you are halving the recipe you can just use the 1/2 cup of broth you have on hand.
